Mentally Challenged Girl Sexually Assaulted During Class in New York School

In May 2012, three male assailants held down a 15-year-old mentally challenged girl and, for nearly ten minutes, forced her to perform oral sex during science class at Martin De Porres Academy in Elmont, New York.  The assailants also tried to anally sodomize the girl, whose IQ score is reported to be less than sixty.

The assault is best understood in the context of a news report, “The Invisible Victims,” by Dan Sorensen, on crimes against people with substantially disabilities as “largely invisible and unaddressed.”   Sorensen reported that the rate of violence against children with disabilities was 3.4 times greater than against children without disabilities.  His report received recognition as Censored Story #20in Censored 2001.
